The Startup Name Survival Test: 5 Checks Before You Commit

Use five practical checks to decide whether a startup name is memorable, credible, domain-ready and able to grow with your company.

A shortlist is not a decision

AI can produce many plausible names in minutes. The harder part is deciding which few are worth carrying forward into a domain purchase, a logo and a launch. Use this test to remove friction before the name becomes expensive to change.

Run the five survival checks

Score each candidate honestly. A perfect score is not required, but a weak result in more than one area is a reason to keep exploring.

  • Remember it: can someone repeat the name after hearing it once?
  • Spell it: can they type it without asking for clarification?
  • Fit the audience: does it feel credible to the people you want to win?
  • Secure a domain: is there a clean domain you can realistically register or afford?
  • Grow with it: will the name still make sense if the product, geography or audience expands?

Use evidence, not internal preference

Say the finalists out loud to a small group that resembles your target customer. Ask them what they expect the product to do, then ask them to write the name from memory. Combine that feedback with domain availability and a structured Brand Score before you commit.

  • Keep three candidates alive until you check their domains.
  • Avoid buying a domain before testing pronunciation and recall.
  • Treat trademark research as a separate legal step before launch.

Turn the framework into domain ideas
